I'm currently working on the next book in Mary Ann's adventures. I'm also working on the next humorous sci-fi book in the Greater Communicating Universe, a space caper following the exploits of my character, Rollie Tsmorlood.<br /><br />That said, what I am still doing here? I have lots of work to do! --Jenn<br /><br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10883854503294092142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173487087895437639.post-84712646565247328632017-12-07T14:58:00.001-05:002017-12-07T14:58:35.572-05:0099 Cent All the Things! <span style="font-family: Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">When was the last time someone read YOU a story? </span><span style="font-family: Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Well, now actress Emily Lawrence can read you one of MINE because announce my Wonderland-inspired humorous mystery novel, THE CURIOUS CASE OF MARY ANN, is now available on AUDIOBOOK via Audible,Amazon and iTunes! Many thanks to Emily Lawrence for bringing Mary Ann and an amazing array of Tweedles, royals, and dangerous beasties to life. I've always been a big audiobook fan; listening to authors like Terry Pratchett and PG Wodehouse in the car certainly have helped ease my daily commuter angst-- and probably even saved lives. :) So having my own book in audio format is incredibly exciting to me personally, and I hope that you will enjoy the audio adventure, too.</span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
October 6 is <a href="http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~ari/madHatter.html" target="_blank">Mad Hatter Day</a>, a day set aside for whimsy and nonsense, with this date selected because of the 10/6 pricetag on the Mad Hatter's hat. Now, in case you'd ever wondered why the Hatter of late never seemed to have a truly clean cup, I thought I'd share with you what my novel, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Curious-Case-Mary-Ann-ebook/dp/B073C7MLS3/" target="_blank">THE CURIOUS CASE OF MARY ANN</a>, has to say about that:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
"While working for Mr. Rabbit this past year, the fellow had promised Mary Ann's assistance for two hours, three times a week to one of his acquaintances, Mr. Simon Milliner, hat maker of Neath. Mary Ann agreed to the work, not because she had much choi<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; font-family: inherit;">ce in the matter (despite his cuddly appearance, Mr. Rabbit was not one easily denied), but because some extra funds would be nice to sock away for the future. She'd even made the sock.</span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; display: inline; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px;">
<div style="font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 6px;">
The problem with this particular position was not specifically Mr. Milliner, though the man WAS prone to the occasional rude personal comment. (She recalled him observing once quite seriously over a cup of hot chamomile how her face resembled a chipmunk in need of a hair restorative.) No, the real issue was that the man had somehow gotten on Time's bad side and was essentially cursed to perpetual tea for eternity.</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Now perpetual teatime may sound like a lovely thing to those who are fans of the stuff. But it presents a certain series of problems in the housemaid/kitchen departments. Mainly, there was simply no way of ever ensuring enough tea, foodstuffs and clean dishes to support the effort. Mary Ann would just get done with preparations and set-up and, suddenly, all was dirtied and devoured again.</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
What's worse, because it was always six o'clock, Mary Ann's allotted two hours per day never came to pass. Hour after hour of work: still six o'clock. Eventually, she'd simply walked out of the engagement... Even Mr. Rabbit hadn't pressed the matter once she'd explained the situation. She'd apparently been gone four days in teatime and now his socks needed mending and the linens changed."<br /><br />Now, I myself am off for a nice cup of English Breakfast and to mull over things that start with the word M. Like Memos... Meetings... and the Many hours before the work week is through. :) --Jenn</div>

<br />
I'm so pleased to announce that my most recent novel, <i>The Curious Case of Mary Ann</i>, got a rather frabjous evaluation from <i>Kirkus Reviews</i> this week. You can check out the review in its entirety here:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/jenn-thorson/curious-case-mary-ann/">https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/jenn-thorson/curious-case-mary-ann/</a><br /><br />One excerpt I'm particularly tickled with....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A9EPsJ0-c38/WcVNNCKS9cI/AAAAAAAAUps/TSWLo7WL1CUWWxhqHsitg4IJqhj9jQatQCLcBGAs/s1600/MaryAnnKirkusReviews.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="129" data-original-width="445" height="115" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A9EPsJ0-c38/WcVNNCKS9cI/AAAAAAAAUps/TSWLo7WL1CUWWxhqHsitg4IJqhj9jQatQCLcBGAs/s400/MaryAnnKirkusReviews.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Also, calling it a "demented but internally consistent detective story" was pretty awesome, too. Little did the reviewer know, those are basically goals for all my stories. And daily life. Definitely daily life.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I figured I'd share the good news. I'm currently writing my next novel, a work-in-progress set in the Greater Communicating Universe featuring my <i>There Goes the Galaxy</i> alumnus Rollie. (There'll be other characters regular readers will know, as well.) If you <b>Like</b> my pages on Facebook--<br /><br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/jennthorsonauthor/">https://www.facebook.com/jennthorsonauthor/</a><br />
and<br />
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/ThereGoestheGalaxy/">https://www.facebook.com/ThereGoestheGalaxy/</a><br />
<br />
--You can see non-spoilery excerpts and regular news on the new book. I'm currently on chapter three.<br /><br />I also have an audiobook coming out for <i>The Curious Case of Mary Ann</i>. I'm eagerly anticipating that, and that should be out either at the end of this month or early October.<br /><br />So that's about it from me. Hope you guys are all doing well and that the first day of Autumn is treating you kindly.<br />

<br />
<br />
I'm so excited to report that my humorous fantasy novel, THE CURIOUS CASE OF MARY ANN, is now available in both paperback and ebook form in a number of countries. The book is set in Lewis Carroll's Wonderland/Looking Glass Land and has a whimsical gothic mystery bent to it. The summary is as follows:<br />
<br />
<strong>Things that start with the letter M: Murder... Motives... Mary Ann</strong><br />
<br />
Mary Ann Carpenter, housemaid to Wonderland’s White Rabbit, misses all the action when Alice drops into town.<br />
<br />
She has her own problems. As witness to the murder of her estranged father, Mary Ann must go <i>under</i>-underground to learn more about the man she barely knew and the motives for his death. But the more she discovers, the more M-words keep coming. Like magic mirrors, monsters, mistaken identity and a murderer who is the mysterious manservant to the Queen of Hearts.<br />
<br />
Mary Ann is mightily moved to unmask his malicious machinations, but can she unearth the evidence, expose the killer <i>and</i> keep a cool head?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
-----------------------<br />
For folks who enjoyed my THERE GOES THE GALAXY trilogy, this is a little different from that but features a lot of the same sort of character-building and humor.<br />
<br />
I hope you'll check it out, if you have a chance!<br />

Hey, there, folks! I had my first <i>There Goes the Galaxy </i>trilogy book signing on Sunday at 1806 Uniques and Antiques in Jennerstown, PA, and it not only was beautiful weather, it turned out to be a very positive experience.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because I'm me I was, of course, neurotically over-prepared. I was pretty much stocked with pens like my character Rollie is with handlasers. I had a back-up, a back-up back-up, a back-up of the back-up back-up... Oh, and a spare or two.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But LOOK! Look at the nice little shelf area we had with books available for sale! (They are still selling my books there, by the way. So if you didn't get to pop by and say hi, and you're missing a paperback, they have all three-- signed. There's also a special deal they're running if you buy more than one.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RA9sZ6uW1SU/WKyHzjjAcKI/AAAAAAAASx8/yKqMh7rEqfcZQCFNK5Yi4C9JbuQt6bH2gCLcB/s1600/TGTGBooksShelf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RA9sZ6uW1SU/WKyHzjjAcKI/AAAAAAAASx8/yKqMh7rEqfcZQCFNK5Yi4C9JbuQt6bH2gCLcB/s400/TGTGBooksShelf.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the artisans in the shop, Duella Fern, made some little themic soaps to go with the book as a giveaway to the first people. It's got a green alien finger on a spacey, sparkly background. (No aliens were harmed in the making of the soap, by the way.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had a little library desk to command for signing, and also to put my 5,000 pens.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WbVV0xe69kY/WKyHzkudLaI/AAAAAAAASx4/zU2Zt-HD8UEnFaFBCqWdCdIVSfWTQ9xEgCLcB/s1600/TGTGBooksSigningDesk%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WbVV0xe69kY/WKyHzkudLaI/AAAAAAAASx4/zU2Zt-HD8UEnFaFBCqWdCdIVSfWTQ9xEgCLcB/s400/TGTGBooksSigningDesk%2B2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And they had refreshments for everyone, including a <i>TGTG-</i>themed cake! We know Bertram Ludlow would have been all about that (free food!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4p6101EFWDs/WKyHzkbNhXI/AAAAAAAASx0/Dln4uhuxpgA6FBMJnty1Urpye2fa8J75ACLcB/s1600/CakeonTableTGTG.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4p6101EFWDs/WKyHzkbNhXI/AAAAAAAASx0/Dln4uhuxpgA6FBMJnty1Urpye2fa8J75ACLcB/s400/CakeonTableTGTG.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just a close-up of the cake.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r-SUq7otxIs/WKyHzxL4NuI/AAAAAAAASyE/Hh-5cx1LMLII8rdrWlmX11DOgocG_LTQgCLcB/s1600/TGTGCakeCloseup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r-SUq7otxIs/WKyHzxL4NuI/AAAAAAAASyE/Hh-5cx1LMLII8rdrWlmX11DOgocG_LTQgCLcB/s400/TGTGCakeCloseup.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The folks that stopped by had some really insightful questions, which I appreciated a lot. And we talked about the books, the writing process, some tips for aspiring writers, etc. I got to hear about people's favorite books and had the good fortune to speak with some young avid readers, which is always refreshing for the soul. I got to see some relatives I haven't seen in a long while, and even some of my friends from Pittsburgh came out to be supportive! All in all, it was a very good day and I was pretty happily tired by the end of it.<br /><br />So now it's back to the grind and to working on <i>The Curious Case of Mary Ann</i>. I'm over 45,000 words now and heading toward wrapping up this draft. Much will be added in subsequent drafts, but the bones are there.<br />
<br />
Hope you all have a great week!<br />

<br />
<br />
Hiya, folks! Long time no write, I know! And why? I have been diligently working on my current book, a humorous fantasy called <i>The Curious Case of Mary Ann!</i><br />
<br />
While it's intended for adults, it's based on Lewis Carroll's <i>Alice in Wonderland</i> and <i>Through the Looking Glass,</i> set in a version of those lands. It follows the White Rabbit's housemaid Mary Ann, who fans of the original <i>Wonderland </i>might recall was mysteriously absent from the home when Alice showed up. <br />
<br />
In my novel, Mary Ann is caught up in her own trials and tribulations, including trying to solve a series of murders, hunting a Jabberwock, performing backwards chores, and rescuing a Knight from his lost sense of humor.<br />
<br />
You won't have to have read either <i>Alice in Wonderland</i> or <i>Through the Looking Glass</i> to enjoy the book-- I'm working hard to make it understandable for everybody-- but I think folks who are fans of the stories, as I am, will have mad fun with it. And people who enjoyed my <i>There Goes the Galaxy</i> series should feel at home here rather quickly.<br />
<br />
I'm about 35,000 words into the first draft, which translates to being between a third and halfway through.<br />
<br />
That said, I am building a <b>email list</b> <b>for anyone who would like to be notified about book releases </b>and other news. Don't worry-- I would not email very often. I've just found that social media, like Facebook and Twitter, is a little spotty and doesn't reach all the of the people who sign up to see my posts. So if you would like to sign up, just fill out the form below and follow the easy instructions. <br />

I hope all is well with you guys! Thanks so much for stopping by! --Jenn<br />

Me, Apparently: Ghostbusters Halloween Costume and Proton Pack<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qhrOHo6riew/V7MaOk7_lUI/AAAAAAAARYk/HeZIf9pZCkwcnniWvsajJDsW84WGIkfLgCLcB/s1600/GhostbustersPatchesGlassesBox.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qhrOHo6riew/V7MaOk7_lUI/AAAAAAAARYk/HeZIf9pZCkwcnniWvsajJDsW84WGIkfLgCLcB/s320/GhostbustersPatchesGlassesBox.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After seeing the new <i>Ghostbusters </i>movie, my inner eight-year-old (who pretty much runs the place) decided that it would be a ton of fun for, er, both of us to dress as a Ghostbuster for Halloween this year while giving out the treats. (Last year, I was Batgirl. The previous year, I was... Batgirl. The year before that I was... okay. You've probably spotted the trend.)<br /><br />Anyway, I figured: how hard could it be? All I'd need was beige work overalls with some trim, a Ghostbusters patch, and whatever other little details I could muster up. I decided I would be my favorite character of the new Ghostbusters, Dr. Jillian Holtzmann. For she is funny, a scientific genius and completely out of her mind. Also she's one of the more recognizable characters.<br />
<br />
So I got a nice, cost-effective jumpsuit via an Amazon vendor (I'm almost five-foot-eight so a Men's Medium was perfect for me). I ordered some 7/8 inch orange reflective trim from a sewing shop. A place on Etsy offers embroidered name tags for all the Ghostbusters, so I snagged myself one of those. I went looking for yellow lensed glasses. And then my brain started getting more ideas. Wouldn't it be nice if I had a proton pack to go with it?<br />
<br />
I had NO IDEA what I was getting myself into, but the journey was a BLAST! (DISCLAIMER: serious 'Busters fans will have to forgive that I took some liberties with the design. The parts were somewhat subject to availability but I worked to keep the same general feel.)<br />
<br />
Anyway, I found a $5 backpack at Walmart I could use as a basis. I went for black and orange to go with the uniform colors.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J7D_BfIDZcQ/V7MUn6sY_mI/AAAAAAAARXc/Cn4OipPmPw4VC_RZf6Dy7prnHNsM1BkDACLcB/s1600/Backpack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J7D_BfIDZcQ/V7MUn6sY_mI/AAAAAAAARXc/Cn4OipPmPw4VC_RZf6Dy7prnHNsM1BkDACLcB/s400/Backpack.jpg" title="" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took the front off the backpack and then, using a staple gun, I upholstered the back fabric to a small piece of plyboard I already had. <br /><br />I had picked up this Ghostbusters pencil case at the same time as the backpack, to use in place of the black toolbox that's on the real prop... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-myQwcYMMy2Q/V7MVMIU7WXI/AAAAAAAARXg/z0pYaHypYpgbSkjXrHhX0AuvehZHhrQegCLcB/s1600/BackpackWoodBox.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-myQwcYMMy2Q/V7MVMIU7WXI/AAAAAAAARXg/z0pYaHypYpgbSkjXrHhX0AuvehZHhrQegCLcB/s400/BackpackWoodBox.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next step was the largest part of the pack-- making the Faraday cage. You know, you start really looking at the world differently when you need to make proton pack on the cheap. Every shape of every household item and every bit of recycling becomes something you evaluate with keen narrowed eyes for a potential new purpose.<br /><br />Ultimately, I bought one of those mesh covers folks use over plates of barbecue food, removed the top handle and spray painted it black. It occurred to me I could light the thing up red if I just got some battery powered lights. So one string of those, stapled into place, and I left the battery pack on the outside, using it as one of the instruments on the pack. <br /><br />I made sure I could still access the on/off button and I painted out all the pesky safety warnings on the battery pack because aesthetically it was better. (Also, it's SO in the spirit of Dr. Holtzmann!: "Safety lights are for dudes.")</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DD8AnuEAaUM/V7MVzBpmpII/AAAAAAAARXs/u2_oDe9CgUgoxhp3Dm5BHyNtIww9jchCwCLcB/s1600/MeshCoverProtonPack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DD8AnuEAaUM/V7MVzBpmpII/AAAAAAAARXs/u2_oDe9CgUgoxhp3Dm5BHyNtIww9jchCwCLcB/s400/MeshCoverProtonPack.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I also made a trip to Construction Junction architectural salvage, and its sister shop, the Center for Creative Reuse, both of which have interesting bits of cool industrial stuff perfect for cheap projects like this. I got some faucet tubing, some circuit boards, wires, a small computer fan, some knobs, wooden dowels and small PVC piping. I painted the piping silver and started Gorilla Glue-ing the other bits.<br />
<br />
Ignore the chip clips-- they were just me MacGyvering things into place. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-36Fh8IJzVuE/V7MW66Qt7jI/AAAAAAAARX4/KqAWdH0W9nkHYnvqOmaQ3SVsfvX9ih7bACLcB/s1600/ProtonPackinProgress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-36Fh8IJzVuE/V7MW66Qt7jI/AAAAAAAARX4/KqAWdH0W9nkHYnvqOmaQ3SVsfvX9ih7bACLcB/s400/ProtonPackinProgress.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The top of the Faraday cage was made by painting shallow dish with wooden dowels glued to it. I tried painting some gauge data on the steam pressure gauge I'd made, but it was hard to do tidily, so I ended up printing out data (copied from the prop) and made some labels to make it look more legit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cDEyRA8A66E/V7MYQHBmqVI/AAAAAAAARYI/7hWFCY0qE9UxkUhbToM9NccZO_MGOPE0ACLcB/s1600/FakeGauge1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cDEyRA8A66E/V7MYQHBmqVI/AAAAAAAARYI/7hWFCY0qE9UxkUhbToM9NccZO_MGOPE0ACLcB/s400/FakeGauge1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AfBwEXbTG5g/V7MYeJmOMbI/AAAAAAAARYU/dOiny-8bzLIPobj06A6oC-Oanf0Cej4jACLcB/s1600/FakeGauge2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AfBwEXbTG5g/V7MYeJmOMbI/AAAAAAAARYU/dOiny-8bzLIPobj06A6oC-Oanf0Cej4jACLcB/s400/FakeGauge2.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
This was also about the time I figured out if I dirtied it up by rubbing on (and then off) black acrylic paint, I could make the thing look like it had seen some action, as well as hide flaws.<br />
<br />
There was a small issue where the Gorilla Glue expanded beyond the area I had expected. So I decided I would just paint it with a neon green Sharpie marker and transform it into ectoplasm.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-saSgmVFWaXw/V7MYICautcI/AAAAAAAARYE/_wZLCYPpvSAvs5ghZ_Tg5B-G5c7VLIJ2gCLcB/s1600/SlimeonCircuitboard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-saSgmVFWaXw/V7MYICautcI/AAAAAAAARYE/_wZLCYPpvSAvs5ghZ_Tg5B-G5c7VLIJ2gCLcB/s400/SlimeonCircuitboard.jpg" width="331" /></a></div>
<br />
I moved on to the neutron wand, snagging a U-hook and a plumbing coupling from Lowes, a PCV electric box and handles from Home Depot, and a lawn sprayer from Walmart. A little glue, duct tape and connected with wires and the kitchen faucet sprayer pipe, and it all came together pretty well.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The jumpsuit was the easy bit!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fiLmcCIw84M/V7MZm-v4W8I/AAAAAAAARYg/4HHXaFAiBqIUhKxosMKJFIw6zBTWU-1oACLcB/s1600/Ghosbusters2016HoltzmannJumpsuit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fiLmcCIw84M/V7MZm-v4W8I/AAAAAAAARYg/4HHXaFAiBqIUhKxosMKJFIw6zBTWU-1oACLcB/s320/Ghosbusters2016HoltzmannJumpsuit.jpg" width="232" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since I sew poorly, I used a fabric fuse iron-on tape to apply the reflective trim, measuring the width of the trim between the two rows. Getting it even was the hardest part, but overall, I'm really happy with it. Holtzmann's name has been velcroed on in case I ever want to go as a different member of the team. Amusingly, the Ghostbusters logo badge was free with a Real Ghostbusters cartoon DVD. Yes, please! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a wig I'm working on to top it all off. In the Egon Spengler tradition, Holtzmann has some crazy-high blond hair. I've got, oddly enough, a Marilyn Monroe wig I'm working with. It's challenging getting the right effect, and I think I'm going to have to adapt her look a little just because of wig logistics. But overall, I think the outfit's going to be good. I'll unveil the whole thing around Halloween.<br /><br /></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I figured it would be a good idea to clue you good folks here into what I've been up to since finishing the <i>There Goes the Galaxy </i>trilogy. (While I remember, <i>The Purloined Number </i>is on sale this week only on Amazon for $0.99 and reduced similarly on international Amazon sites, so if you haven't grabbed a copy, you can get it here in the US: <a class="ot-anchor aaTEdf" dir="ltr" href="https://www.amazon.com/Purloined-Number-There-Goes-Galaxy-ebook/dp/B00FLYGDWE/" jslog="10929; track:click" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: white; color: #427fed; cursor: pointer; line-height: 18.2px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">https://www.amazon.com/Purloined-Number-There-Goes-Galaxy-ebook/dp/B00FLYGDWE/</a> a<span style="background-color: white; color: #404040; line-height: 18.2px;">nd in the UK here: </span><a class="ot-anchor aaTEdf" dir="ltr" href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FLYGDWE/" jslog="10929; track:click" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: white; color: #427fed; cursor: pointer; line-height: 18.2px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FLYGDWE/</a>)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But as I was saying, I have a new book project I'm working on. It will still be humorous, but this time it will have a Victorian Gothic fantasy spin. It's based on characters from <i>Alice in Wonderland </i>and <i>Through the Looking Glass</i>, but with a number of people and twists you might not expect. It's called <i>The Curious Case of Mary Ann</i> and I'm really excited about it. I've been a Lewis Carroll fan ever since I was a kid. The stories just spoke to me because they took such a magical, playful look at life. You could find wonder and mystery in something as simple as a cake or a tiny door, the unexpected places between. I want to tap into that aspect of it.<br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So to give you a sense of it, I thought you might enjoy just a taste of the draft I'm working. Likely this will change a bit in subsequent drafts, but I think it sets a tone.<br />_______</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How many Unbirthdays was it for the Queen so far this year? Three? Four? Mary Ann Carpenter wondered, as she wound along the path to her father’s house. At least three, she tallied, the last one still quite vivid in her mind. Oh, the FUSS Mr. Rabbit made about having his un<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;">iform just so, and the gift presented thus and his coronet polished to a dazzling shine. As if Mary Ann would ever fail him in any of those tasks. As if she had some long history of negligence—of slatternly methods—and hadn’t been running the household silently, smoothly, all along.</span></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #141823; display: inline; line-height: 19.32px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
And now the fussing had begun anew. Mary Ann only prayed the Queen’s latest gift would live up to expectations. The young housemaid had truly stuck her neck out for this. She wasn’t even sure how it happened. Her employer had been working himself into the usual tizzy over Royal gift-giving, and in a mad moment of actual vocalization Mary Ann heard herself say WORDS. And those words suggested Mary Ann’s very own father should craft the piece for the Queen’s special day. She’d baffled herself with the very sound of it. This was a land where outstretched necks met the swift, sharp chop of the executioner’s axe should Her Highness not be properly delighted.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Now she wished she hadn’t spoken at all.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Mary Ann’s father was, of course, not only a talented contractor but the finest woodworker around. He put real passion into the items he carved, and Mr. Rabbit had commissioned a piece that was likely to astound. The designs alone had been enough to send the furry gentleman’s gloved hands a-flutter, whiskers quivering in anticipation, sweet words predicting a future of royal favoritism, rich comfort and bright possibility.</div>

Party<span id="goog_1135711136"></span><span id="goog_1135711137"></span>With <i>Tryfling Matters</i>, the final book in the <i>There Goes the Galaxy</i> story arc complete, I thought it would be nice to have some folks over who have been supportive throughout the process. So this past weekend, I had a little party to celebrate.<br />
<br />
Since I live in a Victorian house and it would be too difficult to space-up all of my decor, I decided the theme would be a house tour for aliens, so they could see what the average Tryfling (Earthling) home was like. I made plaques, dressed as my character Rozz to docent, and some of the information about Earth was wrong because Rozz was trolling. :)<br />
<br />
Anyway, come take a peek at the clever costumes my good people came up with!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f5u1EvLYq6w/VrntvT_uAeI/AAAAAAAAPVQ/3ChcX1DCUNI/s1600/GlowWreath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f5u1EvLYq6w/VrntvT_uAeI/AAAAAAAAPVQ/3ChcX1DCUNI/s400/GlowWreath.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DyjmMj6JQbc/Vrnt0lQBeVI/AAAAAAAAPW0/9087jwIR6Lw/s1600/WelcomeSignClose.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DyjmMj6JQbc/Vrnt0lQBeVI/AAAAAAAAPW0/9087jwIR6Lw/s400/WelcomeSignClose.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Your tour guide... (Me as Rozz)...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V_581se83ig/VrntxGu0RwI/AAAAAAAAPV8/q9br7sHJ8Fk/s1600/Rozz.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V_581se83ig/VrntxGu0RwI/AAAAAAAAPV8/q9br7sHJ8Fk/s400/Rozz.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
No weapons please: leave them at the door (heh, like that was ever going to happen with my characters there!)...<br /><br /><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dLB5lZhpUv0/VrntyBlhqMI/AAAAAAAAPWQ/6r24fSGg5Ac/s1600/SignsatPartyBeforeYouEnter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dLB5lZhpUv0/VrntyBlhqMI/AAAAAAAAPWQ/6r24fSGg5Ac/s400/SignsatPartyBeforeYouEnter.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Some food, slightly themed toward the books (though, honestly, do we REALLY want to eat the things Bertram has consumed during his travels?).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zAKdugc7lYA/VrntvQD4v-I/AAAAAAAAPVM/QCrTphNdwbQ/s1600/Food.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zAKdugc7lYA/VrntvQD4v-I/AAAAAAAAPVM/QCrTphNdwbQ/s400/Food.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XUywYniqd20/VrntwYmEpXI/AAAAAAAAPVo/2DVxNSbMzOQ/s1600/LotsofFood.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XUywYniqd20/VrntwYmEpXI/AAAAAAAAPVo/2DVxNSbMzOQ/s400/LotsofFood.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gxN3_KVRLVU/Vrntu1_hixI/AAAAAAAAPVE/QPkQd8CvyU8/s1600/DustPrawns.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gxN3_KVRLVU/Vrntu1_hixI/AAAAAAAAPVE/QPkQd8CvyU8/s400/DustPrawns.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of two punches, with and without rocket fuel, plus a pitcher of bacontinis (people who have read <i>Tryfling Matters</i> already will get the significance of that).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O6LSQViuEbI/Vrntw4eluOI/AAAAAAAAPVs/1Vs6XaqkwzE/s1600/PunchwithRocketFuel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O6LSQViuEbI/Vrntw4eluOI/AAAAAAAAPVs/1Vs6XaqkwzE/s400/PunchwithRocketFuel.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then the local wildlife arrived, like this very clever Altairan Daisy...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-22-PLeTfngQ/Vrnttnhs47I/AAAAAAAAPUg/o2qTz5wcJlg/s1600/AltairanDaisyentrance.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-22-PLeTfngQ/Vrnttnhs47I/AAAAAAAAPUg/o2qTz5wcJlg/s400/AltairanDaisyentrance.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thankfully no one was eaten alive by the daisy. I don't have homeowner's insurance for that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bYa9Sjw-WV0/VrnttrxTKRI/AAAAAAAAPUc/7itY70wMc8Q/s1600/AltairanDaisy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bYa9Sjw-WV0/VrnttrxTKRI/AAAAAAAAPUc/7itY70wMc8Q/s400/AltairanDaisy.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
An antennaed lifeform called an "Aunt."...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A species known as "Cousins"...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7U1Y-29Zuz4/VrntuBWhMwI/AAAAAAAAPUs/VdtFd4IW0mw/s1600/Cousins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7U1Y-29Zuz4/VrntuBWhMwI/AAAAAAAAPUs/VdtFd4IW0mw/s400/Cousins.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span data-offset-key="4p95f-0-0">Great news, folks! I'm so excited to formally announce that <i>Tryfling Matters</i>, the final installment of the <i>There Goes the Galaxy </i>book trilogy, is now available in paperback and ebook form through Amazon! If you enjoyed the humorous sci-fi of <i>There Goes the Galaxy </i>(book 1) and <i>The Purloined Number</i> (book 2), you won't want to miss this fun conclusion. I had a great time writing it and I think you might enjoy it a lot. The book summary is as follows:</span></div>

<span data-offset-key="1s1f0-0-0">Earth— known to the rest of the universe as Tryfe.</span></div>

<span data-offset-key="4ul0d-0-0">No matter what you call it, the little blue planet’s had its share of hard knocks. It’s been bought and sold to alien developers. It’s been held for ransom. Now the universe’s most famous Tryflings—Bertram Ludlow and Rozz Mercer—have returned to clean up the mess.</span></div>

<span data-offset-key="1cmlv-0-0">And what a mess it is. Family is acting strange. An alien corporation is running the place. And corporate outreach has an unusually hungry vibe.</span></div>

<span data-offset-key="4ovom-0-0">Of course, even alien overlords need quality staff, so Bertram and Rozz boldly dive into the belly of the beast. <div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Well, as of last evening, draft one of <i>Tryfling Matters </i>(<i>There Goes the Galaxy</i> book three) is done. </span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">To quote Captain Amazing from the movie <i>Mystery Men</i>: "Is it perfect? No. And that's what I like about it!" </span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I admit to shedding a few joyful tears as I figured out my last scene and my last few words. A lot has happened since poor psychology grad student Bertram Ludlow was abducted by aliens from his basement apartment. A lot has happened for me, too, while putting these books out there. </span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I would like to take the opportunity to once again thank everybody for being so supportive. The words of encouragement, the book in-jokes, the honest reviews and the word-of-mouth have all helped inspire me to continue rolling forward.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">There's lots of work still ahead of me, of course, and I have a list of items I still want to integrate that's as long as my character Rollie's intergalactic rap sheet. But right now the draft is something tangible I can hold and reread-- and most of all, it's something to work from. I feel like it's on the right track.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 19.3199996948242px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">So, today, I leave you with that stellar news and a little excerpt I'd had fun with in the first draft: </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #404040;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.2222232818604px;">Rolliam Tsmorlood had a limited experience with those newly-born to the planet Tryfe. I'm still working on <i>Tryfling Matters</i> (<i>There Goes the Galaxy</i> Book 3) and have reached 42,000 words, so it's been some good progress. I thought you all might enjoy a quick snippet of what I've been working on. (No plot spoilers, so don't worry!)<br /><br />
In a recent scene set on Earth (Tryfe), my character Bertram uses the excuse that Rollie, who is from the planet Hyphiz Delta, is from Holland. Rollie's still trying to get his arms around the idea:<br />
<br />
“I’m from Holland,” Rollie grumbled as they walked from the bus stop on their way to the ship. He’d been unusually quiet the whole bus trip back to Shadyside. “I’m… Hollandaise… now.”<br />
<br />
Bertram stifled a laugh. "Wherever you heard that word? Just: no."<br />
<br />
“Well, I wouldn't know, would I? It's why I've always kept things vague with Tryfe people.”<br />
<br />
"Dutch," said Bertram. "You'd be Dutch."<br />
<br />
"Dutch?! How the frag do you get that from--"<br />
<br />
Rozz patted his shoulder. “Chill out, Rollie. That’s why it’s perfect. This is the U.S. Not knowing anything about the rest of the world is a total badge of honor. You’ll be golden.”<br />
<br />
Rollie seemed unsure. “Maybe I can find some books on it.”<br />
<br />
“Look,” said Bertram, “tulips, windmills, wooden shoes, water, legalized drugs and prostitution. That’s all the average person here knows. It’s a non-issue.”<br />
<br />
“So like Vos Laegos with impractical footwear and wind power?” Rollie smiled. “I should visit sometime; research.”Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10883854503294092142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173487087895437639.post-67597913492731719502015-02-27T10:29:00.001-05:002015-02-27T10:29:24.656-05:00Why Heroes Rarely Save the World Using Mass TransitFor your Friday enjoyment, I thought I'd share a little excerpt from my <i>Tryfling Matters</i> that I'd been working on:<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Bertram arrived at the school a half hour early. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>This</i>, he thought as he stepped off the bus, <i>is why movie heroes don’t choose mass transit</i>. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Based on the schedule, he could have arrived now or an hour from now. Being late for a mission was inexcusable; being early ruined the vibe. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
He noticed the weight of his overcoat and patted the right pocket, making sure his handlaser was still turned off. If there were anything he’d learned from Rollie, it was that timing and outward control were everything. And burning a hole through your only suit jacket was a sure-fire way to throw off both. </blockquote>
<br />
Hope you all have a stellar weekend! I will be spending it writing. (A real surprise, I'm sure. :) ) --JennAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10883854503294092142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173487087895437639.post-25618066641346350672015-02-23T12:25:00.001-05:002015-02-23T12:25:34.132-05:00Ninety-Nine Cent E-book Sale and a Little Excerpt from Tryfling Matters (TGTG3)<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Greetings and salutations, fine peoples! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Just wanted to let folks know, I've put <i>The Purloined Number</i> (TGTG2) on sale for $0.99. If you haven't picked it up and you like humorous scifi, you might just want to check it out. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It's set up so you don't have to have read the first <i>There Goes the Galaxy book</i> to read this one, even though it is the second in the trilogy. The first book is also currently at $0.99, so it's a pretty wallet-frugal investment right now for some cosmic fun. You can access book two here:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">http://www.amazon.com/Purloined-Number-There-Goes-Galaxy-ebook/dp/B00FLYGDWE/</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And in other news, I've been hard at work on writing the third and final book in the TGTG story arc, <i>Tryfling Matters</i>. So I thought I'd start sharing some snippets here. Today we see Rozz's new day job is not without its mysteries.</span><br />

But these days, most people in the Nerd-American community had expectations for a certain level of comfort and amenities commensurate with their job skills. And very few of them would have been all, "Oh, well. Whatever" about working conditions where Cthulhu could have rocked the nine-to-five one cube over.</span></span></blockquote>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #404040; line-height: 20.2222232818604px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Lots going on in this book. I think you folks are going to enjoy it.</span></span><br />

<br />
Greetings folks! Happy 2015! I hope the new year is treating you well so far. I have finally gotten over a case of the plague, and after 17 Penny Dreadful-level days of coughing and dreck have passed, the upside of being a living, breathing, non-sicky person has finally kicked in.<br /><br />It hasn't hurt that Friday, a social media friend let me know that <i>There Goes the Galaxy</i> had been reviewed (and positively!) by BoingBoing. I do believe it's my first review by an online entity that actually has its own Wikipedia page! Anyway, you can check out the cosmic review here:<br /><br />
<a href="http://boingboing.net/2015/01/09/there-goes-the-galaxy-by-jenn.html">http://boingboing.net/2015/01/09/there-goes-the-galaxy-by-jenn.html</a><br />
<br />
Otherwise, I have polished off the draft of chapter 16 of the third and final book in the <i>TGTG </i>trilogy, <i>Tryfling Matters</i>. I'm aiming to have the first draft done by spring. And I've had some fun doodling some pugs and other furry creatures doing things pugs and other furry creatures tend not to do. Like piracy and picnics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2e4tkV9B5H4/VLPL5yqQ3QI/AAAAAAAAMXA/cmCJri962BI/s1600/PugnatiusPugwashofthePugquatica.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2e4tkV9B5H4/VLPL5yqQ3QI/AAAAAAAAMXA/cmCJri962BI/s1600/PugnatiusPugwashofthePugquatica.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It started because one of my Facebook friends, who loves bright colors and pugs, was feeling a bit down and I wanted to cheer her, if briefly. I came up with Captain Pugnatius Pugwash of the pirate ship Pugquatica... Y'know, as one does.<br /><br />Then I had this need to see what the rest of his crew might look like. Thus, the mateys below.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bk8hSo8TxUM/VLPL-2q4iAI/AAAAAAAAMXI/u0gkSO79uEk/s1600/PiratePugCrew.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bk8hSo8TxUM/VLPL-2q4iAI/AAAAAAAAMXI/u0gkSO79uEk/s1600/PiratePugCrew.jpg" height="283" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The little doodle below is actually based on my two cats, Harry and Alice. I didn't like how the sky turned out, so I cut it out and replaced it with a French toile type scrapbook paper. Their costumes are loosely based on the famous paintings of Pinkie and Blue Boy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-00mGAIqS3r0/VLPMQeVMocI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/YUxdNUDGqok/s1600/HarryandAliceCatHaveaPicnic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-00mGAIqS3r0/VLPMQeVMocI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/YUxdNUDGqok/s1600/HarryandAliceCatHaveaPicnic.jpg" height="295" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, that's what's going on here in my part of the Greater Communicating Universe. I hope you all are doing well and that the various Victorian-era plagues going around have missed you and your families.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>I keep seeing the above image on Facebook,</b> in an ad for an online fashion site. And each time I do, my brain automatically comments: "Mighty Morphin Power Ponchos."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />Clearly, someone needs to get a group together to wear these garments-- one color of each-- and strike ninja poses in the various open spaces around Pittsburgh. Y'know, to liven things up between <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthrocon" target="_blank">Furries Conventions.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"Go, go, Power Ponchos!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />(And um, no, I am not volunteering. I'm the Ideas Person. Implementation is free for someone else. :) )<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Speaking of ideas, there's this meme going around where you go to Google Images, you type in your first name and the word "meme" and see what images pop up related to it. I decided to try it for my lead alien character Rollie.<br /><br />This is what came up for that.<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_NpfCvlZEe0/VIr0mGVGEUI/AAAAAAAAMEE/Xo8lltbsbus/s1600/AncientAliensRollie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_NpfCvlZEe0/VIr0mGVGEUI/AAAAAAAAMEE/Xo8lltbsbus/s1600/AncientAliensRollie.jpg" height="350" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For folks here who are familiar with my books, I am open to any and all suggestions of what exactly Rollie did to the Ancient Aliens guy. Go ahead! Be creative. Because with Rollie, it really could be pretty much anything.<br /><br />Speaking of Rollie, I've been doing a few little doodly illustrations in the evenings from the books-- just for my own entertainment. Below is Bertram and Rollie at the Lunch-n-Launch Diner from <i>The Purloined Number</i>.<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k6vm6RkPn38/VIr50q12KiI/AAAAAAAAMEw/jUwtC_-lvXw/s1600/BertramRollieDinerFinal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k6vm6RkPn38/VIr50q12KiI/AAAAAAAAMEw/jUwtC_-lvXw/s1600/BertramRollieDinerFinal.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Bertram does enjoy digging into the alien chow!<br />
<br />
Below is Rollie on Altair-5, from the perspective of an Altairan Carnivorous Daisy. Yup, them's some big angry posies!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9c3LNsFKprs/VIr0nVHb9sI/AAAAAAAAMEQ/5nDa6Z2rWQA/s1600/RollieAltairanCarnivorousDaisy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9c3LNsFKprs/VIr0nVHb9sI/AAAAAAAAMEQ/5nDa6Z2rWQA/s1600/RollieAltairanCarnivorousDaisy.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the last drawing is also from <i>The Purloined Number</i>-- my character Meena showing her sculpture at the art gallery on the planet Gwash. Meena's art is done in backspace materials, like paper mache, architectural salvage and despair. <span style="color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, lucida grande, tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px;">Oh, and she'd want me to tell you, she accepts commissioned work! :)</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YrKaXL8dd28/VIr0mLI9jKI/AAAAAAAAMEA/nG_dfXfChOQ/s1600/MeenaPurloinedNumberGwashArtGallery.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YrKaXL8dd28/VIr0mLI9jKI/AAAAAAAAMEA/nG_dfXfChOQ/s1600/MeenaPurloinedNumberGwashArtGallery.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, that's it from me. I've got various holiday tasks to do this weekend, including trying to find gifts for people who don't want anything, and clumsily taping pretty colored paper onto non-conforming objects. <br /><br />I swear, if anyone at this time of year ever asked me what superpower I would like, I'd say: to make wrapping paper bow to my will and not cause every present to look like some kindergartener hepped up on sugar plums wrapped the gifts.<br /><br />---JennAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10883854503294092142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173487087895437639.post-73694394462382146932014-07-25T13:06:00.002-04:002014-07-25T13:07:19.883-04:00The Mawwidge of Pwincesses, Pencils and Paypah<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now that I've finished the main, non-baddie cast, I thought you folks might enjoy seeing the character drawings from the movie <i>The Princess Bride </i>that I did this week. I started with Pwincess... er... <i>Princess... Princess </i>Buttercup. This is from the scene where she dreams she married Prince Humperdinck and gets booed by her royal subjects...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5M3PVvZUJ_0/U9KJR9QwFdI/AAAAAAAAKNI/hlOpzg9mp4w/s1600/QueenButtercupPrincessBride.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5M3PVvZUJ_0/U9KJR9QwFdI/AAAAAAAAKNI/hlOpzg9mp4w/s1600/QueenButtercupPrincessBride.jpg" height="400" width="276" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here is her true love, Wesley (in Dread Pirate Roberts mode). He's only lying there because he's been Mostly Dead all day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e_50piVcTY8/U9KLKI8rulI/AAAAAAAAKNs/8rxRVLBV-Fo/s1600/CareyElwesWestleyDreadPirateRobertsPrincessBride.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e_50piVcTY8/U9KLKI8rulI/AAAAAAAAKNs/8rxRVLBV-Fo/s1600/CareyElwesWestleyDreadPirateRobertsPrincessBride.jpg" height="400" width="358" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course I had to do my personal favorite character, Inigo Montoya... (say it with me, folks: "Hello: my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.".... Ah! Feel better now? I do.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zbWIGa3YbGg/U9KJRwCnvxI/AAAAAAAAKNM/jcfnnqpRPiE/s1600/MandyPatinkinasInigoMontoyaPrincessBride.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zbWIGa3YbGg/U9KJRwCnvxI/AAAAAAAAKNM/jcfnnqpRPiE/s1600/MandyPatinkinasInigoMontoyaPrincessBride.jpg" height="400" width="330" /></a></div>
<br />
I also thought it would be fun to draw the ever-nefarious Vizzini-- as inconceivable as that might be...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VLE6qYsjmN8/U9KJSabr7CI/AAAAAAAAKNQ/7D1TMlNjlAY/s1600/WallaceShawnVizziniPrincessBride.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VLE6qYsjmN8/U9KJSabr7CI/AAAAAAAAKNQ/7D1TMlNjlAY/s1600/WallaceShawnVizziniPrincessBride.jpg" height="400" width="366" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this morning, I put the finishing touches on the beloved strong man Fezzik, as played by the late Andre the Giant. ("<i>My</i> way? What's 'my way'?")</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LQ5Qo-jeOlA/U9KLhJdlSJI/AAAAAAAAKN0/Mnyh2WcTPCw/s1600/AndretheGiantFezzikPrincessBride.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LQ5Qo-jeOlA/U9KLhJdlSJI/AAAAAAAAKN0/Mnyh2WcTPCw/s1600/AndretheGiantFezzikPrincessBride.jpg" height="376" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So now? I must close the book on this post. May your weekends all end up "happily ever after!" --JennAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10883854503294092142noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173487087895437639.post-80961434565241904472014-07-16T09:21:00.000-04:002014-07-16T09:24:41.858-04:00Where Have All the Plural Pants Gone?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pOB4V2bxffQ/U8Zu4llepOI/AAAAAAAAJ2g/Wl3Li986atI/s1600/TheSoftPant.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pOB4V2bxffQ/U8Zu4llepOI/AAAAAAAAJ2g/Wl3Li986atI/s1600/TheSoftPant.jpg" height="375" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It arrived in my Inbox this morning. "The Soft Pant."</div>
<br />
The email claimed to be from DressBarn, but my instinctual mistrust of the denizens of the internet suggested to me it probably was porn spam. Because if there's any soft panting going on online, that's usually where it'll find ya.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But no. Further inspection revealed a strange new perspective in fashion marketing. Somewhere along the way, it seems our bum-covers have become all feisty and leg-independent-- lone wolves, toughing it out in a statement of personal destiny, rugged individualism and polyester blends.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd seen hints of this leghole-based libertarianism a few months ago. There was one sign in Express, and another in New York & Company, proclaiming the chic awesomeness of this or that particular "pant." I had only just mentioned it to my friend Linda, when she promptly discovered this ad in her own email...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ia-XCjwChbY/UzBB3cEzGkI/AAAAAAAAGR0/GH5rQuY2sHY/s1600/TummyControlPant.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ia-XCjwChbY/UzBB3cEzGkI/AAAAAAAAGR0/GH5rQuY2sHY/s1600/TummyControlPant.jpg" height="320" width="303" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The "tummy control pant." <b>One pant to control them all! </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ah, if only Frodo had enjoyed the benefits of this singular garment of belly-bulge-bracing resolve, he might have been able to finish his epic journey in the span of a standard two-hour feature film.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I admit, it has me curious just how far the ramifications of the solo "pant" go. I mean, plural pants have been a part of our language for a while now. And I don't know if I'm ready to adapt. For me, it brings up questions of consistency.</div>
<br />
Now do we tell someone to, "Put your pant on one leg at time"?<br />
<br />
Do we talk about who "wears the pant in the family"?<br />
<br />
After a big meal at the SuperPanda buffet, do we lean back in our chairs and exclaim, "My pant is too tight!"?<br />
<br />
For my British friends, in a moment of dismay, are we required to exclaim, "Oh, pant!"<br />
<br />
And if a film really sucks, must we proclaim, "That movie was pant!"<br />
<br />
Also, I want to know if this applies to synonyms for the two-legged garments. Will we soon be up to our navels in "trouser"? On the weekend, will we slip into our favorite pair of "jean"? Do we now go to the meeting in one fashionable "slack"?<br />
<br />
Is this some insidious ploy by the shirt and sweater marketing associations, who've secretly felt bitter all these years for having two sleeves yet being referred to as one piece of clothing, forcing them into being united for a single cause? Is this some sly chance to urge conformity among the soft cloth funnel wearing masses?<br />
<br />
I want to know.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6WccsXAUOT4/U8Z3jswtJ4I/AAAAAAAAJ2s/bFxOWEdl32Y/s1600/GetYourSoftPant.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6WccsXAUOT4/U8Z3jswtJ4I/AAAAAAAAJ2s/bFxOWEdl32Y/s1600/GetYourSoftPant.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
In the meantime, I glance suspiciously at the "headphone" on my desk and wonder. And wait.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10883854503294092142noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173487087895437639.post-29258015731720298582014-07-15T09:45:00.000-04:002014-07-15T09:45:12.289-04:00Humorous Sci-Fi $0.99 Sale Cosmicness!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Heads up to my reader buddies on here!-- I decided to have a little summer sale for my humorous sci-fi books during the next week. Both <i>There Goes the Galaxy</i> and <i>The Purloined Number</i> are now available on Kindle, Nook and Smashwords for $0.99 a piece. They're also available proportionately cheap in the UK, Canada, etc. on Amazon-- I just didn't want to overload folks with too many links.<br />
<br />
So if you were looking for a good time to pick up a copy of either of those to books, this might just be the time to snag them. Or if you know someone who enjoys sci-fi in the general <i>Hitch-hiker's Guide</i> or Terry Pratchett tradition, I'd love it if you would pass the sale info along. The details are as follows:<br />
